Xavier At The Farm

Our radar has not let go of Xavier Dolan, the young up-and-coming Quebecois director who caught our attention with three exquisite, visually striking feature-length movies, I Killed my Mother, Heartbeats and Laurence Anyways. Mere months after Laurence Anyways hit the US distribution circuit, Dolan is back with a new flick. Titled Tom At The Farm, the movie revists many of the themes present throughout the rest of Dolan’s work: sexuality, youth and the challenges of love.
In Tom At The Farm, Dolan plays Tom, a young advertising copywriter who visits the countryside to attend the funeral of his lover, Guillaume. There, he clashes with his former partner’s mother and oppressive brother. The film is described as a “psychological thriller” and while, thematically, the movie covers the same ground as its predecessors, Tom At The Farm is an altogether heavier, grittier piece. Dolan’s style – long, lingering shots, and intense close-ups – is still present, but in Tom, the young auteur – Dolan is 23 years old – gives the story more room.
The movie won the FIPRESCI International Critics Award at the 70th Venice Biennale last month, and has recently aired at the Toronto Film festival. So far, a French release is slated for March 2014 with US and UK distribution deals yet to be signed.
For now, here’s the trailer that premiered in time for the movie’s premiere at the London Film Festival later this month – watch it below.
