Wild Flag – Endless Talk

2011 saw the release, into the public domain, of side projects from the entire Sleater-Kinney lineup. Corin Tucker went the heartfelt, acoustic route with the (exquisite, in my opinion) 1,000 Years. At the other end of the indie rock spectrum, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss joined forces with Mary Timony and Recebba Cole to form Wild Flag, whose eponymous debut album made waves both critically and commercially, and further propelled Brownstein’s already sizeable visibility (Portlandia, anyone?) further into the echeleons of indie royalty.
Both eschewed unfavorable comparisons to the band that made their name in entirely different, yet equally compelling, ways. For Wild Flag, this came in the form of a skillful dichotomy of chaos and melody, which has been most obvious on “Endless Talk”, the band’s new single.
Just like the album that carries it, “Endless Talk” showcases a band that sounds as though they’ve been together for far longer than a mere few months. And just like its predecessor, “Romance,” this is a confident, no holds barred, perfect three-minute pop song.
