On View: American Journeys: Visions of Place

In Independence Day month, the Corcoran Gallery of Art has reinstalled American Journeys: Visions of Place, an exhibit exploring the evolving idea of place in American art. With over 125 paintings and sculptures drawn from the permanent collection, this is the largest exhibit on American art shown in the gallery.
American Journeys was inspired by David McCullough’s book The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris. The exhibit is made up of four sections, beginning with “Pride of Place: The New Nation.” “The Lure of Paris” and “New York in the New Century” follow, along with “Beyond Borders.” From the sprawling beauty of the east and rollicking freedom of the West to the influence of Paris on American artists and the gritty allure of New York City at the turn of the century, American Journeys tells the story of America through a beautiful showcase of the places that inspired the nation’s artists.
