Oberhausen Short Film Festival honors the powerful “Estancia”

The 60th Oberhausen International Short Film Festival came to a close on May 6, with festival organizers noting an increase in turnout over last year. The theme of the festival was “Memories Cannot Wait – Film without Film,” exploring “the possibilities for a new kind of cinematic freedom.” The festival was curated by Mika Taanila.
The Grand Prize was awarded to “La Estancia” from Paraguay’s Federico Adorno, a 14-minute film showing peasants returning to their village after being accused of murder during their eviction. The festival honored the film as a “profound critique of systematic oppression.”
Awards also went to Teboho Edkins’ “Gangster Backstage” and Maria Kourkouta’s “Epistrofi stin odo ailolu.”
The 61st festival is scheduled to take place April 30 through May 5, 2015.
