Florida-born, Connecticut-raised photographer Aaron McCElroy’s work sits somewhere between voyeurism and documentation. Through objects, spaces and details of female anatomy, McElroy’s work hides many stories yet never fully tells them – the viewer’s imagination is just as much of a central character as McElroy’s subjects. Hauser and Hauser recently published After Wake, a book described as “visual fragments & anonymous female subjects from the artist’s daily life,” – and that’s probably as polite a way as one can use to describe the photos.


MmcElroy’s work was recently shown at MoMA PS1, Horton Gallery New York, Ampersand Gallery Portland, and FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam, among others. Below is a selection of favorites from this series.
