L’eclisse
The Criterion Collection is adding three more movies this month, including two on the 17th and one on the 24th. Earlier this month, Criterion released Picnic at Hanging Rock, Peter Weir’s 1975 adaptation of Joan Lindsey’s book of the same name.
Antonioni’s L’eclisse (1962) and Franju’s Judex (1962) joined the lineup on the 17th. L’eclisse, starring Alain Delon and Monica Vitti, is the last in a trilogy that includes L’Avventura (1960) and La Notte (1961). This installment follows a young woman as she breaks off an affair with an older man and begins a relationship with a superficial stockbroker. The film won the Special Jury Price at Cannes in 1962. Judex, on the other hand, is an adaptation of a pulp serial, in which the titular character targets a banker responsible for swindling clients.
Later this month, A Hard Day’s Night (1964) joins the collection alongside Peter Davis’s 1974 Vietnam documentary Hearts and Minds. A commercial and critical success directed by Richard Lester, A Hard Day’s Night portrays a few days in the life of The Beatles. The musical comedy is at turns absurd and slapstick, and is considered one of the greatest films of all time.
